Scope
A conceptual design was planned, as a basis for a pursuing governmental maturation project. The desired outcome was a testable prototype of a kit, adequate for laymen under war conditions. It should consider transportation opportunities, estimated medical conditions and human capabilities.
Methods
Research methodology: The problem was defined by literature and visual research to approach medical problems of civilians in war and current solutions. To investigate in emotional needs and intellectual resources of civilians, primary research by means of interviews, questionnaires and a knowledge test were carried out.
Operational methodology: International medical guidelines, specialists’ expertise and idea generation tools served to improve the internal and external qualities of the kit and render a 3D model. In different practical mock-emergency scenarios a physical prototype including a clickable app were tested on teams of two non-medics.
Findings
For the anticipated medical problems (maternal, infectious, nutritional, internal and injuries) under war conditions, currently, there is no adequate solution. Medical intellectual resources are low, but advances in technology like nano-sensors and smart devices are promising options. A backpack sized smart medical kit was designed, new, concerning lay-usability, serving from prevention to aftercare, and diagnostics nearly approaching doctors’ practice conditions. Tests revealed that the use of the kit prototype improved medical care and users felt more confident in treatments.
Conclusion
The project was challenging concerning limitation of therapies, estimated abuse and hostile environment. However, the designed prototype was effective. If matured, the kit has the potential to save lives. Additionally, the paper contributed to the field of design, by presenting a synthetic research approach for disaster management design, fusing medical research strategies with design methods.
