November 13, 2024Zine to be Seen: Negotiating Identity and Building Communities as Third Culture Filipino-Hongkongers
The research into immigrant children and third-culture kids often speaks about the rootlessness and restlessness felt by these people having to balance their native or parents’ native cultures with that of where they live and grow up. This study investigated Filipino-Hongkongers that grew up as third-culture kids and explored their concepts of identity and belonging. It was discovered that while these people at times struggled with their senses of belonging, they also found the agency and flexibility to define their identities in whatever way they see fit. Informed by interviews with Filipino-Honkongers, the design output of the project was a zine. The aim of the publication was to bring to light the feelings and experiences of this group of people, providing a space for them to find solidarity, as well as a platform to be seen and heard beyond their own communities.
