This paper explored the product design of an innovative new e-drum multipad.
A look into the history of electronic drums led into secondary and primary research exploring user needs, wishes, existing products and the state of the current market. Due to the author’s experience of working as a profes- sional musician for eleven years, a majority of insights could be gathered from experiences, colleagues and observations.
Research endeavours have thereby been kept close to the end user to ensure a relevant and desirable product that allows for the important emo- tional musician-instrument connection.
Analysis of the results revealed an opportunity to fill gaps in the market- place and adjust to changing requirements in modern music performance. Further objectives discovered were to create an instrument that supports musicians with their ever-growing responsibilities and thereby improve comfort and confidence on stage.
The product development encompassed three sections: the hardware multipad with all its components; the multipad’s on-board software; and the user experience and interface design of an editor software working on a computer alongside the instrument.
Keeping close contact to the users throughout the project has led to a promising product which will be presented to existing manufacturers as potential collaborators in due time.
